Human Services Concentrations
Applied sociology
Students in this concentration apply sociological insight to the public in collaboration with governments, non-profits, businesses and community organizations. Courses analyze a range of social institutions, social inequalities, social movements and social justice issues. Applied sociology concentration students produce positive social change and resolve social issues through active intervention in real-world settings.
Gerontology
This concentration is designed for students to specialize in the interdisciplinary study of aging and the aged, and to examine the diverse social contexts for aging-related changes locally, nationally and globally. Courses cover the physical, cognitive and psychosocial developmental changes in late adulthood and emphasize human service agencies, programs, and policies that serve and affect older adults. Gerontology students are strategically positioned to improve the aging experience of escalating numbers of older adults.
Social work
Students in this concentration explore the theory and practice of social work, develop academic knowledge and professional skills in providing human services to diverse or vulnerable populations, and help individuals solve and cope with problems. Courses cover human development across the life span and interpersonal communication skills, with an emphasis on settings for social work practice. Social Work concentration students improve the well-being of individuals and families and are positioned to pursue MSW programs and professional licensure.
